Adapting to Small Space Living

By now, it’s something of a cliche to say that owning a home is the American dream. For some people it is, but millions of others choose to rent rather than take out a mortgage and own a home. Of course, there are many others who end up in an apartment because of economic necessity. Job relocation, change in relationship or financial situation, or simplifying your lifestyle are just some of the factors that can lead to someone downsizing and moving into an apartment.

For some, the prospect of downsizing can be hard to swallow. It’s true, apartment living often means living in a smaller space than what you might be used to. However, there are creative and inspirational ways to make a small apartment into a cozy living space. Here are four ways to do just that.

It’s a chance to declutter. There’s a lot of buzz these days about how living with less is living with more, and how decluttering your home can reduce stress and lead to a simpler, happier life. Downsizing is the perfect opportunity to get rid of all the stuff you’ve accumulated over the years.

Creative storage ideas. If you go through the process of decluttering but find you still need more storage space than you have in your new apartment, a little brainstorming and creativity are all you need to make more space. Some ideas include an ottoman or coffee table with a storage hatch to store books, photo albums and more. Of course, you have an incredible amount of storage space under your bed, and a nice bed skirt will conceal those bins and make for a clean, crisp look.

Trick your eye into thinking there’s more space. With a few smart decorating tricks, you can create the appearance of having more space. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Lay a throw rug with vertical lines down the length of the room to create the appearance of a longer space.
  • Keep your windows uncovered to create a sense of depth.
  • Hang large mirrors on the wall.
  • Use larger decorations to avoid a cluttered look.
